The trail was very well maintained and groomed. It was a fairly long trek, but the incline was pretty gradual, so it wasn't overly difficult. We did lose the trail briefly a couple times- you just need to pay attention to the cairns and you are fine.

For reference, I am a 30 year old woman that runs regularly.

Bell Rock pathway was our starting point. We moved onto the Templeton trail and after going under the road, we moved South onto the "Shade" system of trails (Slim Shady, Made In The Shade, etc.) This is where the views are fantastic and the trail gets a bit more topographical and a little technical. Eventually the "Shades" gets you back to the VOC and the Bell Rock Pathway trailhead. Moderate length and not too difficult. Perfect hike to work up an appetite for a plate of Mexican and a Negra Modelo (with a squeeze of lime).

Please note: Vultee Arch is accessible from Oak Creek Canyon (89A) or FR152. The route from Oak Creek is strenuous and approximately 3.5-4 hour roundtrip. If accessing from FR152 then the trail is moderate and 1.5 hours roundtrip. (Note: FR152 does require a high clearance vehicle)

Beautiful views the whole way up! I was a little worried about the level 5 difficulty but it wasn't too bad at all. Good workout! Love my hiking trips to beautiful Sedona! Thank you Hike House for your advise!

Laurel,

Have not completed planning for Spring as of yet. At minimum, we will have our Hiking 101 clinic which includes an hour long hike and practical tips as we hike in Munds Wilderness.

Please check back in Feb or March.

Look forward to seeing you in Sedona.

Regards,

Greg Stevenson

Hiked this September 5th, 2011 at 6am. Excellent view of the Sunrise. Biggest surprise was that most of the trees had burned in a fire. This provided the opportunity to see Aligator Bark Trees that were blackened and as a result very shiny. It was amazing how different the landscape is on the front of the mountain, compared with the back. Tons of brush on the back – would’ve been better if we’d worn long pants and sleeves as it’s quite overgrown from an abundance of rain this summer. We hiked all the way to Vultee Arch trail head. We stopped at the top on the way back for about 10 min. Total time was 2:45.

We hiked from the parking lot because we were afraid our SUV wouldn't make it and after watching several vehicles stop and park we were happy with our decision. The beginning of the trail is a good time to get adjusted and view the terrain. Once we passed the trail head it became more important to look for the cairns in order to follow the trail. On the natural stair case leading to the large flat ledge I learned to just take my time and bear crawl if necessary (i had photo equipment in a pack on my back). This trick definitely helped on the second set up stairs. Once I was at the top I just had to get out on the bridge. It was an amazing experience for someone used to hiking in Missouri where we don't have rock structures such as this. Perfect photo op for me and my friends! Thanks Mike for giving us GREAT trails to hike! We had a wonderful experience thanks to your advice!
