Marg’s Draw Trail

The Hike House Sedona Trail Rating System
Marg’s Draw Trail

This scenic trail can be hiked from the Broken Arrow Trailhead (as described here), from the Sombart Lane trailhead, or from Schnebly Hill. From Broken Arrow, it begins by crossing the wash just north of the parking area and enters Wilderness. Shade is soon left behind and nice red rock views open up as the trail winds its way north across a nearly flat expanse dotted with juniper, pinyon pine and Arizona cypress. The trail crosses the draw by a scenic dry waterfall at the .75 mile point.

Nearing one mile, a half-mile long spur trail comes in on the left from the trail access at the end of Sombart Lane. Continue ahead. Soon, Uptown Sedona, Capitol Butte, Wilson Mountain and Steamboat Rock come into view. At 1.25 miles, the trail curves around the base of Camel Head and there is a good view of that formation and of Snoopy Rock above and to the right. The trail leaves Wilderness, crosses Schnebly Hill Road, and goes east about .8 mile before ending at a large parking turnout. Return by the same route or hike one way with arranged transportation. The hike can be extended to the north using Huckaby Trail and to the south using Broken Arrow Trail.

We started at the Sombart Lane TH and went out/back to Schnebly Hill. Interesting views and good trail for general hiking. The spur from Sombart Lane TH to the main trail is a uphill challenge for flat-landers, but doesn’t last too long. Several false trail splits are there, but trust the main trail to take you to the sign at the main trail junction.

Rated the views as compared to other trails hiked, not GREAT but good. Diverse plant life for those interested. Difficulty was tainted by the elevation change coming up the spur. Would not call it a “walker’s” trail, but not hard.

I’m an out of shape 50+. I hiked pieces of Margs Draw multiple times in the past year and really enjoyed it. I first started at the midpoint and headed south towards Broken Arrow, losing the trail and turning around right near the Draw. The second time I started from the Broken Arrow trailhead off Morgan Rd (south end) and hiked to the midpoint at Sombart Ln. Another time I hiked in from Sombart and did the northern half up to Schnebly Hill road. If I add the times, it took me about two hours end to end.

Some climbing up and down across rocky washes, but mostly easy walking. More shade at the northern end. Going south it is easy to lose the trail near the Draw. (my first attempt) Going north from Broken Arrow, it was easier to follow. Beautiful views of the Munds wilderness and the mountains nearby.

I hiked early, 6:30am, beginning at Broken Arrow with no distractions. I caught good views of Steamboat, Capital Butte, Elephant Mt, and Cathedral Rock. It seemed that there was more shade than indicated especially as you pass Snoopy and continue to Huckaby. A cup of coffee or smoothie on the patio afterwards hits the spot.

Hogs Trail

Hogs Trail One of the most underrated areas in Sedona is Munds Wilderness. Many people in the past would take on this area because the predominant trail for this area, Broken Arrow, is adjacent to a heavily traveled jeep road. A new day has arrived…while you still must hike a portion of Broken Arrow to get to Hogs, the trail departs from the … [Read More...]
