The trail immediately enters Wilderness. The wide, nearly flat trail leads into the wide canyon mouth with nice views, but no shade from the desert scrub vegetation. At 2/3 mile, HS Canyon Trail branches off to the left. About 2 mi. in the David Miller Trail over to Bear Sign Canyon departs to the right. Vegetation varies from chaparral to mixed conifer along this typically dry water course. After 2 mi. there is shade from oak and ponderosa and nice views of red rock formations. This hike can be extended further into the narrowing box canyon for up to an 11 mi. round trip. (Coconino National Forest) Click here to download a pdf version.

My favorite hike in AZ so far is West Clear Creek Wilderness. The main reason is the variety of plants, sun and shade, climate zones, vistas and 8 water crossings to cool you down (4 each way & back). Most suprising were several small sandy beaches on this permanently-running natural stream, as well as the abundance of fish in the cool clear water.
BELIEVE the signs re the roads! need high clearance vehicle! Beautiful the entire trip. Went in dry season so no streams were flowing which would have been nice-you could tell there would have been several. Very quiet, could only hear the wind blowing through the trees! Very remote so carry all appropriate gear! Cell phone didn’t work reliably!
Trail ran this hike. Wonderful views and solitude. No water in April….would highly recommend. High clearance vehicle needed- it was faster to run the FS road instead of driving.
Secret Canyon is a gorgeous trail lots of scenery not crowded and a good length. The road in is tougher than we thought, though!
Did a partial Secret Canyon hike today. Went about 1/2 mile past the junction of Secret Mountain and David Miller trail. Started at about 3:00pm from the trail head. Amazing beautiful canyon and relatively easy hike (I gave it a 3 for distance). I want to go back when I have more time and hike farther in to the box canyon. Lot’s of coyote scat on the trail and what I believe were bear footprints. A little eerie given how remote you are and no one else on the trail.
